Walk Time Out’s top neighbourhood: music, hanok and crafts in Jongno 3-ga
Instrument shops, tiled hanok lanes and craft stops beside a royal shrine share one walk. Start in the afternoon to see all three faces of Jongno 3-ga, Time Out’s number-one neighbourhood for 2026.
- Music shops first: Weekdays/Saturday 10:00–19:30; limited Sunday opening
- Lanes and the shrine wall: If the arcade is closed, focus on a walk and dinner
Instrument shops, hanok lanes and the shrine wall
Arrive in the afternoon for the instrument shops, or make an evening arrival about the lanes and dinner. Browse guitars and pianos at Nakwon, then step under Ikseon-dong’s tiled eaves: the contrast between a large working arcade and small reused homes is part of the appeal. Seosulla-gil adds craft shops and tea beside Jongmyo’s stone wall.
Time Out’s 2026 choice is Jongno 3-ga, a specific neighbourhood within Seoul.

Lanes and the shrine wall

Start at Jongno 3-ga Station on Lines 1, 3 or 5. Use Exit 5 for Nakwon Music Arcade. Its listed weekday and Saturday hours are 10:00–19:30; only some shops open on Sunday. Ask before touching or playing an instrument.
From working instrument shops to hanok lanes
On floors 2 and 3 of Nakwon Building, shops specialise in guitars, pianos, wind instruments and other instruments. New and used instruments sit alongside repair specialists and audio equipment. Even without buying, looking at the instruments and components shows the neighbourhood as a working place for musicians. If one instrument interests you, start with a shop specialising in it.
Look at the building from the street, too: a road passes beneath it and a market occupies the basement. Seeing this large commercial building before entering Ikseon-dong makes the change to low hanok roofs and narrow lanes more striking.

In Ikseon-dong, look at the roofs as well as the shopfronts. Glass windows and signs beneath tiled eaves show how traditional Korean houses now accommodate cafés and restaurants. The second photograph shows a narrow lane between walls and eaves.
At Seosulla-gil, the wall has a purpose: inside lies Jongmyo, the royal ancestral shrine. Seoul links the street name to the patrol guards who once watched the shrine’s surroundings. A lane and craft-shop walk and a visit to the ceremonial grounds are different outings. To combine them, fit the shrine’s admission arrangements into your day first.
From instrument shops to the wall
Businesses keep individual hours, so an accessible lane does not mean your chosen shop is open. The walking plan below excludes entry to Jongmyo and its admission ticket.
Suggested plan
- 01
Nakwon Music Arcade · 30–45 min
Browse shops; Sunday has fewer open businesses
- 02
Ikseon-dong · 45–60 min
Explore the lanes and choose one meal or café stop
- 03
Seosulla-gil · 30–45 min
Walk outside Jongmyo’s western wall
Editorial plan: adjust for your walking speed and breaks.
- 1Jongno 3-ga station centre
Not an exit; Exit 5 serves the music arcade
- 2Nakwon Music Arcade
A building of instrument shops
- 3Ikseon-dong hanok lanes
Lanes with individual business hours
- 4Seosulla-gil reference point
Outside the shrine; not its entrance
A tea stop and nearby sights
For tea, add Traditional Dawon at Kyungin Art Museum in Insadong, at 11-4 Insadong 10-gil. It serves traditional and leaf teas. The tea-house hours checked on 17 October 2026 conflict: Seoul Tourism Organization lists 11:00–21:20, while Korea Tourism Organization lists 10:00–22:50. Plan a daytime or early-evening stop rather than relying on either late closing time.
Before ordering dinner in Ikseon-dong, read the price per person and minimum-order terms on the menu; ask how many people a shared dish serves. A Gwangjang Market food visit is a separate extension covered in the existing market walk.
See craftwork, or book a making session
Gallery Sowyen Cafe at 149 Seosulla-gil has a small room displaying jewellery and metal crafts. Add it to the stonewall walk for a drink and a closer look at the work. Seoul Tourism lists Saturday 11:00–22:00 and Sunday–Friday 11:00–21:00.
For making a ring yourself, book Maison de Anneal at 56 Samil-daero 30-gil, third floor. The workshop operates by reservation, weekdays 10:00–19:00 and weekends 10:00–21:00. Discuss silver, gold or platinum, band width, thickness and engraving when arranging the quote; this is a booked activity rather than a shop to browse on impulse.

Sharing the narrow lanes
Some lanes are shared with vehicles. Keep doorways and the path clear for photographs and respect homes and windows. In rain, spend longer indoors and shorten the wall walk. The suggested stop lengths below are planning allowances, not measured walking times.
