Suwon Hwaseong walk: one-hour route versus the Paldalsan climb
For a short start, choose Dongjangdae (Yeonmudae) → Banghwasuryujeong → Janganmun, an official one-hour course. Paldalmun → Seojangdae → Hwaseomun is a 90-minute course with Paldalsan stairs and climbing. Fortress viewing is free; Haenggung palace admission is separate.
- About 5.7 km is the whole fortress length; a one-hour course is not a complete circuit.
- Regular palace night opening is Friday–Sunday and public holidays, 18:00–21:30, last entry 21:00; the 2026 season is May 1–November 1.
One-hour and 90-minute courses
Hwaseong is a fortress in central Suwon, Gyeonggi-do. Hwaseong Haenggung is a separate palace inside it, with separate visiting conditions. For a first visit, choose an official short course rather than committing to the entire approximately 5.7 km wall. Times below are Suwon tourism’s course categories, not guaranteed durations including rests or festival crowds.
Avoid the hilltop climb
Dongjangdae (Yeonmudae)
- Official course category
- One hour

- Dongjangdae → Banghwasuryujeong → Janganmun
- Walking conditions
- Omits Seojangdae hill climb; not certified step-free
Paldalsan viewpoint course
Paldalmun
- Official course category
- 90 minutes
- Order
- Paldalmun → Seojangdae → Hwaseomun
- Walking conditions
- Paldalsan stairs and climb
The one-hour course goes from Dongjangdae, also called Yeonmudae, through Banghwasuryujeong to Janganmun. Dongjangdae was a military command post; Banghwasuryujeong is a pavilion beside Yongyeon pond. This route omits the Paldalsan climb to Seojangdae, making it useful when avoiding a longer hill walk. It does not certify step-free access, including steps into the pavilion or local level changes.
The 90-minute course goes from Paldalmun through Seojangdae to Hwaseomun. The city identifies stairs from Paldalmun onto Paldalsan; Seojangdae is the hilltop command post. Choose it if you want the view and can manage the climb. A separate one-hour course starts at Seojangdae and continues to Hwaseomun/Janganmun: starting there does not include your initial ascent to the hill.

Free walls and palace admission
The foundation lists fortress viewing as continuously open, year-round and free, including night visits. This does not make every building interior or paid experience always available. Haenggung/Hwaryeongjeon individual admission is KRW 2,000 adult, 1,500 youth/military and 1,000 child. Ordinary daytime visiting is 09:00–18:00 with entry ending 17:00. For two adults, walls only cost zero; adding ordinary palace admission costs 4,000 before meals, transport and activities.
The regular 2026 palace night season runs May 1–November 1 on Fridays through Sundays and public holidays, 18:00–21:30, with last entry at 21:00. The October 3–11 extension to 22:00 has ended.

From Suwon Station, plus food
The official access guide suggests city bus 60, among others, from across Suwon Station exit 7 to Jangan Park for Janganmun. It separately lists 700-2 from transfer-centre platform 7 to the same stop. A station exit and bus platform are different locations. Check the chosen service’s current stop and return connection when leaving. Fares, frequency and total travel from Seoul are not included in the one-hour walk.
If finishing by Paldalmun, consider the Paldalmun/Yeongdong/Jidong market area for food; adding Haenggung puts Haenggung-dong restaurants and cafés nearby. Suwon galbi is grilled beef ribs; serving weight and price vary by restaurant. Some other galbi dishes use chicken, so check the meat on the menu.
