Ulsan Taehwagang National Garden: daytime bamboo or evening lights?
Visit by day for the bamboo grove and river views, or after sunset for the illuminated Milky Way Trail. The grove extends roughly 4 km; the lit section is 600 m. Its lights run from sunset until 23:00.
- The garden is free and open 24 hours; lights, information facilities and car parks have separate hours.
- For a night walk, match the 23:00 lighting cutoff with your car park’s own hours. The garden’s 24-hour opening is separate from parking hours.
Daytime grove and evening lights
Taehwagang National Garden follows the river across Jung-gu and Nam-gu in central Ulsan. Start on the Jung-gu bank to pair bamboo with the food street. Choose daylight for bamboo paths and river views, or darkness for Milky Way Trail lighting. Roughly 4 km describes the whole grove; choose your own walking section within it.
The illuminated Milky Way section is 600 m. Lighting starts at the daily sunset time and ends at 23:00; do not assume an 18:00 start in every season. The garden’s 24-hour opening is separate. A city notice dated July 23, 2026 announces the closure of the third-floor cafe in Taehwagang Observatory. It does not announce closure of the entire tower, but plan your refreshment stop elsewhere.

From the railway station
KTX Ulsan Station and Taehwagang Station are different stations. The garden’s transport guide lists buses 523, 1733, 5001, 5003 and 5004 from Ulsan Station; from Taehwagang Station it lists 523, 713, 763, 1115, 1733 and 9001. Named destination stops are Taehwagang National Garden or Donggang Hospital. This does not mean every bus calls at both: check the selected service’s stop and return journey. The current visitor-centre address in that guide is 5 Saetgangnam-gil, Jung-gu, Ulsan.
Korean names for map searches: 태화강국가정원, 십리대숲, 은하수길, 동강병원.
Parking charges and operating hours
For standard passenger cars at Jung-gu City Management Corporation public car parks, the first 30 minutes cost KRW 500. Within each subsequent 30-minute block, up to 10 minutes cost 200, up to 20 cost 400, and up to 30 cost 500. The daily maximum is 10,000. Thus 60 minutes cost 1,000 and 120 minutes cost 2,000 before discounts or large-vehicle surcharges. This tariff does not cover every car park around the national garden.

The corporation’s October 2026 table lists National Garden car parks 1–5 as operating 09:00–19:00 year-round. The Simnidaebat and National Garden roadside parking entries separately list 13:00–19:00, with Monday–Wednesday closed. These are operator hours, not a guarantee of free parking outside them or available spaces. Check exit conditions and on-site signs for a night visit or festival date. Use the current operator table rather than capacities in older garden introductions.
Actual locations and food
Map point 1 is the bamboo grove, 2 the Milky Way Trail, 3 Taehwaru Pavilion and 4 Taehwagang Observatory. Lines are registered roads and footpaths; points are location references, not entrances or the start of an accessible course. A single point does not trace the whole 600 m lighted section. Taehwaru, at 300 Taehwa-ro, is a riverside pavilion for an additional stop; inspect the map before choosing the outward and return walk.

Across the road in front of the grove is the National Garden food street, listed by city tourism around 29 Singi 4-gil. Ori bulgogi is seasoned grilled duck; haemul sundubu is a seafood soup with soft tofu. Dwaeji gukbap is pork soup served with rice. Choose a restaurant that fits your meal time: the food-street listing does not establish individual prices or late-night opening.
Rain and equipment rental
The garden FAQ says paths were designed for wheelchairs and strollers, but some unpaved sections may be restricted in rain. Do not assume every path is flat or passable in wet weather. Field information booths lend wheelchairs and strollers from 10:00, requiring ID and return by 16:50; stock is not guaranteed. These rental booths and the visitor centre should not be treated as the same facility.
