Cheongnamdae admission and walks: short 1 km trails or the lakeside route?

For a short walk, choose the Democracy or Harmony Trail: each is 1 km with an operator estimate of 20 minutes. The Lakeside Trail is 3.1 km, estimated at 90 minutes. Adult individual admission is ₩6,000. Entry closes at 16:30 except in December and January.

  • Under-7 child and one guardian free; individual senior admission ₩3,000.
  • December–January: last entry 15:30, close 17:00. Monday holidays shift closure to the next first weekday.
  • Monorail costs extra; align both directions with the detailed departure table.

Cheongnamdae is a former presidential retreat beside Daecheong Lake in Munui-myeon, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. Start with the main building and gardens, then add one trail. Allow extra time for exhibitions, rests and the walk from the car park beyond the operator’s trail estimates.

Individual admission prices checked on October 17, 2026. Seniors aged 65 and over pay ₩3,000. Two adults, a 10-year-old and a 67-year-old cost ₩12,000 + ₩3,000 + ₩3,000 = ₩18,000. The bars below include admission only; meals and the monorail are separate.

A child under seven and one guardian qualify for free admission. For two adults with a six-year-old, the child and one adult guardian are free, leaving ₩6,000 for the other adult. Bring the required proof of eligibility. The official fee table gives the conditions for other eligible groups, including military personnel, disabled visitors and pregnant visitors.

Groups of at least 20 pay ₩5,000 per general visitor, ₩3,000 per teenager and ₩2,000 per child or senior. Registered residents of Chungbuk, Chungnam, Daejeon and Sejong receive ₩1,000 off with identification showing their registered address. A same-day Munui shop receipt covers one visitor per ₩10,000 spent, with up to ₩2,000 off per person. Discounts do not stack; use the largest applicable one. Have the receipt when buying admission. A meal bought after visiting is not an advance discount on the current ticket.

Six trail lengths and estimated times

The current names are Ogakjeong, Solbaram, Democracy, Unification, Harmony and Lakeside Trails. Older accounts may use former presidents’ names. Match the current trail names to the operator’s map and signs.

Democracy and Harmony are the shortest: each is 1 km with an estimated 20 minutes. Ogakjeong is 1.5 km, estimated at 30 minutes, and the operator classifies it as a barrier-free sharing trail. Solbaram is 2 km and 40 minutes; Lakeside is 3.1 km and 90 minutes. These are the operator’s route estimates.

Main building and gardens → one trail → a meal in Munui is an editorial itinerary suggestion. Do not add the separate trail lengths to claim a total route from the car park or a continuous loop. Connections and walking times from specific entrances are outside this comparison.

Restricted section and equipment loans

The restriction notice posted on 24 June 2026 covers the 645 stairs, hiking trail and Unification Trail from the first observatory to the suspension bridge. Its text gives a 29 June 2026 start, while the image on the same page prints 29 June 2025. Both give late July 2026 as an expected completion, not an actual reopening date.

This notice alone establishes neither current opening nor continued closure. For a first visit, plan the main house and garden plus one short 1 km walk or the 3.1 km lakeside trail; add the 645 stairs and affected Unification section only after checking their current access. This limits the recommended plan pending confirmation; it does not claim the closure continues. Observatory monorail visits have separate fares, timetables and same-day weather or maintenance conditions.

Wheelchairs, strollers and walking aids are available free at the loan point opposite the Cheongnamdae Memorial Hall; identification is required and stock can run out. Ogakjeong’s classification does not guarantee step-free access throughout the car park, buildings and every trail. For specific access needs, contact the management office at 043-257-5080.

Ordinary opening is 09:00–18:00, with ticket sales and entry from 09:00 to 16:30. In December and January, closing is 17:00 and last entry is 15:30. Time remaining after the entry deadline also has to cover movement and visits; do not treat it as a full 90-minute trail allowance.

The site closes on Mondays, January 1 and the actual days of Seollal and Chuseok, Korea’s Lunar New Year and autumn harvest holidays. If Monday is a public or substitute holiday, closure moves to the next first weekday. The official October notice specifies opening October 3–5 and closure October 6 and 12.

The official homepage lists the 2026 autumn festival for October 31–November 8. Saturday night opening runs until 21:00 on October 31 and November 7. The bars show ordinary hours. Night opening does not establish a night monorail service or opening on Monday, November 2; use the festival’s separate operating notice.

The monorail is separate from admission. At age 13, admission uses the ₩4,000 teenager rate, while the monorail uses the ₩3,000 child rate. Age 14 enters the ₩5,000 general monorail band. The fare page does not state whether its ticket covers one direction or a return journey; no round-trip total is assumed here.

The dedicated timetable checked October 17, 2026 lists 20 departures in each direction: uphill 09:20–17:00, downhill 09:50–17:30. The first uphill arrival is 09:27, the last uphill arrival 17:07 and the last downhill arrival 17:37. Vehicle checks pause service from 12:00 to 12:50. After the morning’s last uphill departure at 11:20 and downhill departure at 11:50, service resumes uphill at 13:00 and downhill at 13:30.

The general visiting page instead says 09:30–18:00 with checks from 12:00 to 13:00. Use the detailed departure table to pair your uphill and downhill trips, subject to on-site changes. Do not carry this October timetable over to winter or festival night opening.

Only folding strollers can be carried on board, and pets cannot ride. The outdoor site’s dog-entry rules are separate from the monorail rules.

Parking, on-site tickets and location

For navigation, search Cheongnamdae Management Office (청남대관리사업소) or Cheongnamdae car park (청남대 주차장). The address is 646 Cheongnamdae-gil, Munui-myeon, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk. The operator’s driving directions exit Munui-Cheongnamdae IC toward Munui/Sintanjin, then turn left at Munui junction for the 12 km approach to Cheongnamdae. Parking is free.

The current individual visit process is to drive into Cheongnamdae, park, then buy admission at the on-site ticket office. An old village ticket-office label in Munui is not the current ticketing destination. Map point 1 is the main building’s centre, not a car park entrance or ticket office.

Without a car, align your visit with a reserved Cheongju City Tour date. Use Cheongju Integrated Reservations, Tourism/Experiences → City Tour. The Tourism Council is 043-234-8895 and the tourism information centre is 043-223-1259. This is not a frequent daily drop-in shuttle.

Food and cultural heritage in Munui

Munui’s restaurants and cultural heritage complex can be combined with the drive back from Cheongnamdae. They are separate places outside the site. The map shows real roads and locations, not a measured walking itinerary.

The operator’s restaurant directory lists Samcheonnyang Boribap (삼천냥보리밥) for kalguksu and boribap. Kalguksu is noodle soup with noodles cut from wheat dough; boribap is barley-mixed rice served with vegetables and other Korean side dishes. Address: 6-16 Munuisinae 2-gil (문의시내2길 6-16); telephone 043-298-9877. The name “Samcheonnyang” is not a current menu price. The directory gives no current menu prices or opening hours.

Munui Cultural Heritage Complex (문의문화재단지) presents traditional life, including Munsangwan and relocated, restored houses. Address: 721 Daecheonghoban-ro (대청호반로 721); telephone 043-201-0915. It is a separate destination, not an exhibition included inside the Cheongnamdae admission ticket.
