Mokpo Old Town on Foot: Two Museums and a Portside Hill

Allow about 3–4 hours from Mokpo Station for both Modern History Museum buildings and an old-town meal. Visit the museums in the morning or early afternoon; add Mokpojin only with daylight and spare time. Monday is the normal museum closure.

  • Visit both museums early; entry closes at 17:00
  • KTO lists a KRW 2,000 adult combined ticket
  • Mokpojin is optional and involves a hill

From the station to the museums

Mokpo is a port city in southwestern Korea. Arriving by train, start at Mokpo Station, 98 Yeongsan-ro. Allow roughly 20–25 minutes to walk to Building 1 and extra time for the final uphill approach.

Walking and visit times here are planning estimates. Check trains for your travel date and adjust for street works.

Building 1, at 6 Yeongsan-ro 29beon-gil, occupies the former Japanese consulate completed in December 1900. Establishment of the consulate in 1898 is a different date. Its exhibitions connect the port opening, colonial rule and Korean independence movements. The familiar television-drama exterior is only one part of this historical stop.

After Building 1, walk down to Building 2 at 18 Beonhwa-ro. The municipal route describes a three-minute link; allow 5–10 minutes for crossings and finding the entrance. This former Oriental Development Company branch continues the account of colonial exploitation and resistance. Read the two museums together rather than treating them only as attractive old buildings.

Listed free: confirm combined access at the first counter

Checked on 17 October 2026, KTO lists a combined individual ticket covering both buildings: KRW 2,000 for adults aged 20+, KRW 1,000 for ages 14–19 and KRW 500 for ages 8–13. The city’s Building 2 listing says free, so official online information conflicts. Confirm combined access at the first counter and retain the ticket. Do not automatically budget two full adult tickets totalling KRW 4,000.

Plan around opening at 09:00 and entry closing at 17:00. Official closing times differ between 17:30 and 18:00; see both museums in the morning or early afternoon. Listings give Monday and 1 January closures, with closure moving to the following day when Monday is a public holiday. Check dated city notices for your visit. The Building 2 works notice for 11–30 November 2025 is an expired period, not a current closure.

An optional daylight hill stop

With spare daylight, add Mokpojin. This historic park commemorates a Joseon naval garrison and has partly reconstructed structures and views towards the port. The city lists free admission, but its “0:00–0:00” hours field does not verify round-the-clock access. Plan an outdoor daytime visit and do not assume entry to every building.

Allow about 10–15 minutes from Building 2 to Mokpojin and 15–25 minutes in the park. The approach is hilly and the city lists no disability facilities. If wheelchair or stroller access matters, check the museums’ specific entrances first and skip the optional hill as needed. Museum contacts are +82-61-242-0340 and +82-61-270-8728.

Lunch and the return train

Jangteo Sikdang at 23 Yeongsan-ro 40beon-gil is an old-town meal option. KTO lists its seasoned crab-meat bibimbap: crab meat mixed with rice. Call +82-61-244-8880 to check that day’s service, break, prices and minimum order. Save the exact address to avoid the restaurant of the same name in Jayu Market. Choose another local meal if you avoid seafood.

Allow 45–60 minutes for the meal plus any queue, then roughly 15–20 minutes back to the station with a separate train-boarding buffer. Gatbawi, the cable car and Gohado need their own transport plan. The port festival is scheduled around Mokpo Port and Samhakdo on 16–18 October 2026; allow extra local travel time on those dates.
