- Proof-based 50% parking discount differs from some categories’ free first hour.
Korean map names: 양동시장 · 양동시장역 · 청춘발산마을
Yangdong Market sits beside the Gwangjucheon stream in Seo-gu, Gwangju. A useful first visit is shopping, a meal, then departure; add the clothing arcade if needed. This is an itinerary suggestion, not a surveyed walking loop or a claim about every stall location.
Ingredients, clothing and a meal
| Task | Where to browse | Decide first |
|---|---|---|
| Produce and seafood | Main market ingredient stalls | Can you cook at your accommodation? |
| Clothing and household goods | Neighboring covered shopping arcade | Size, contents and exchange terms |
| Eat or take away | Chicken and snack shops | Dine in or carry food home? |
The main market sells fruit, vegetables, seafood and goods for weddings and ancestral rites. The neighboring covered arcade specializes in clothing wholesale and retail.
For perishable shopping followed by sightseeing, settle storage and packing before buying. Compare clothing prices for the same size and contents, including exchange conditions.

Market days and Sunday hours
Dates ending in 2 and 7 describe the market’s beginnings in the 1910s. It now operates as a permanent market; you do not need to wait for those historical market days.
Current Korea Tourism Organization listings give 07:00–21:00 and closure on the first, third and fifth Sunday, with variation by shop. The city’s older tourism page gives produce from 03:00, manufactured goods 09:00–21:00, first/third Sunday closures in April–September and daily opening in October–March. The Sunday rules conflict.
In October 2026 the first/third Sundays are October 4/18; in November the first/third/fifth are November 1/15/29. These are caution dates under the KTO rule, not proof that every shop closes. For a particular shop, confirm its Sunday opening before departing; market inquiries: +82-62-366-0884.
Daytime fits a combined retail-and-meal visit. Early produce trading does not establish clothing or chicken-shop opening times. Tongmaek Festival booths follow their separate event dates; do not plan them as a nightly permanent market.
Parking fees and discounts
First 30 minutes
₩700 + ₩350 × 2
₩700 + ₩350 × 6
The operator’s fee table checked October 17, 2026 lists grade-1 parking at ₩700 for the first 30 minutes, then ₩350 per additional 15 minutes; the published daily fee is ₩8,000. The bars show standard parking only, excluding purchases and food.
Market merchants and customers qualify for 50% off with proof of use. Ask the shop about parking evidence before paying, and present it at settlement. Accepted receipts or validation procedures depend on the facility.
Registered light cars receive 60% off and environmentally friendly vehicles 50%. Some disability/veteran categories receive one free hour followed by 50% off; that is not a universal market-customer entitlement. Registration and evidence apply. Parking operator: +82-62-601-6053.
Which parking address to enter
| Operator-listed car park | Navigation address | Listed spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Yangdong Dakjeongil Market public car park | 32 Yangdongsijang 2-gil | 80 |
| Covered arcade lower car park | 441 Yang-dong | 270 |
| Covered arcade upper car park | 324 Numun-dong, Buk-gu | 62 |
| Yangdong Traditional Markets joint public car park | 5-29 Yang-dong | 148 |
Listed spaces describe capacity, not vacancies. Upper and lower facilities have different addresses; the upper one is in Numun-dong, Buk-gu. A generic market-parking search result is not the entrance of every facility.
The operator lists paid car parks as open 24 hours. Monthly-pass daytime/nighttime windows are not hourly-parking closing times. Ask the particular facility about clearance and width if your vehicle needs extra space.
Metro access and the actual map
Take metro Line 1 to Yangdong Market station. From Gwangju Songjeong, board toward Sotae/Nokdong; both stations are on the same line.
The metro operator’s adult fare checked October 17, 2026 is ₩1,250 with a transport card or ₩1,400 for a single-use ticket. One adult’s card round trip is ₩2,500. Compare that with ₩2,800 for two hours of standard parking using your party size and any validated market discount.
Station exits 1/2 list escalators and stairs. Elevators inside the station do not make these two street exits step-free. For an accessible route and lift operation, contact the station at +82-62-233-9157.
Map marker 1 is the market-area center, 2 the actual Exit 1 coordinate and 3 Balsan Bridge. The map does not identify stall doors, a market gate or a recommended walking route. The market address is 238 Cheonbyeonjwa-ro.

Chicken, lettuce wraps and fermented skate
Yangdong Tongdak and Suil Tongdak are well-known market chicken-shop names. Tongdak here means fried chicken. Choose a shop for a meal or takeaway and match current menu price, portion and packaging to your group.
Sangchu twigim is not fried lettuce: fried squid and similar bites are wrapped in fresh lettuce with onion-soy sauce. If you have a seafood allergy, ask about ingredients and shared cooking equipment before ordering.
Hongeo is fermented skate, a ray-like fish with a strong aroma. Discuss it with your companions if the dish is unfamiliar. A numeral in a shop name such as Yangdong Cheonwon Guksi is not a current price available to every customer; check the ordering conditions.
Adding Balsan Village
If time remains, add nearby Cheongchun Balsan Village along the stream. Official tourism describes a hillside residential neighborhood with murals, sculpture and public-art projects. It is a separate destination outside the market.
Its address is 12-16 Cheonbyeonjwa-ro; urban-regeneration inquiries:+82-62-360-7691. Tourism lists continuous access and no car park. If hills or heavy purchases make the extra stop inconvenient, finish after your market meal. Respect residents’ doorways and private spaces when walking or taking photos.
