Daejeon Central Market: station access, dumplings and evening hours
The city tourism guide estimates about 5–10 minutes on foot from KTX Daejeon Station to Central Market. Shop hours and closing days vary. The city restaurant listing gives Gaecheon 11:30–20:30, closed Mondays. The 2026 Totojeul Food Festa notice lists Fridays and Saturdays, 18:00–22:00, from 14 August to 28 November.
- Locate the train station and subway exit 1 separately.
- Choose dried seafood, tool, hanbok or food alleys by what you want to buy.
- Festival hours do not set the closing time of every market shop.
Daejeon Central Market (대전 중앙시장) is in Dong-gu, Daejeon, opposite Daejeon Station. Its tourism address is 대전로 783, or 783 Daejeon-ro. The name covers several markets and alleys rather than one building. Include Daejeon in a map search to distinguish markets with the same name elsewhere.
Train station, subway exit and market map
Dong-gu’s tourism page places the market directly opposite the KTX station square. The city article’s 5–10 minute walk is an estimate that depends on your starting point and chosen shop. It is not a measured journey from a train platform to a restaurant.
Daejeon Station on subway Line 1 has the registered address 중앙로 지하 218, 218 Jungang-ro underground. The transit operator lists four exits. The map below separates the railway station centre from subway exit 1; the railway marker is not a particular station door.
The operator lists lifts and escalators at the subway station. That does not establish an accessible journey through exit 1 and every market alley. For a stroller or wheelchair visit, check the selected exit and the particular shop’s access.
Mokcheok Bridge (목척교) is west of the market. Eunhaeng-dong’s Euneungjeongi Culture Street (으능정이문화거리) lies in the direction across the bridge and can extend a market visit. Map lines are registered roads rather than a recommended walking route checked for signals or works.

Separate markets and shopping alleys
Korea Tourism Organization lists Jungang Jonghap, Jungang Sangga, Jayu Domae, Sin Jungang and Jungang Domae among the component markets. The map highlights four units with verified registered geometry. It is not the entire complex boundary or a shop floor plan.
Look for dried-seafood and fish alleys for groceries, tool alleys for hardware, and hanbok alleys for traditional Korean clothing. These goods need not all be inside the same market building.
For a meal, search the food alleys or a restaurant name. City tourism also describes used books, tableware and miscellaneous goods. A browsing visit and a purchase of a specific item call for different alleys. The photograph below dates from 2014 and does not establish today’s shops or stock.

Gaecheon dumplings and Smof Chicken
Gaecheon Restaurant (개천식당), 042-256-1003, is listed by city tourism for mandu and manduguk: filled dumplings and dumpling soup. Listed hours are 11:30–20:30, closed every Monday. The listing does not establish public-holiday exceptions, temporary closures or last orders.
Two city sources differ on the address. The restaurant directory gives 대전로779번길 39-2; the market article gives 대전로779번길 37. Both give the same phone number. Match the name 개천식당 and 042-256-1003 when choosing a destination.
The city market article describes Smof Chicken (스모프치킨) at 대전로791번길 31, phone 042-242-9944, for soy-sauce chicken and dakgangjeong, fried chicken coated in sauce. It does not supply exact shop hours or closing days. Gaecheon’s schedule does not apply to this shop.
Food prices and collection waits described in the 2025 article are not used as current prices or predicted queues. Check the menu portion, price and takeaway option when ordering to distinguish a full meal from a shared snack.
Shop closures and the 2026 evening festival
| Place or service | Listed hours | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| General market shops | Varies by shop | Check individual hours and closing days |
| Gaecheon city restaurant listing | 11:30–20:30 | Closed every Monday |
| 2026 Totojeul Food Festa | Fri–Sat 18:00–22:00 | Notice period: 14 Aug–28 Nov |
Korea Tourism Organization says ordinary shop hours and closing days vary. A single market-wide timetable would obscure a restaurant’s Monday closure and the separate evening event.
Dong-gu’s opening notice, posted 3 August 2026, lists the Totojeul Food Festa for 14 August–28 November, Fridays and Saturdays 18:00–22:00. The venue is Hwayeoltong (화월통), a 260 m event corridor between Jungang-ro and IBK Bank. The 260 m figure is not the walk from the station.
The notice lists food, flea-market stalls and performances. A Friday–Saturday event does not mean all neighbouring shops stay open until 22:00. Compare the restaurant and event schedules if you plan dinner before the festival.
The district’s 2026 Chuseok image specifies closure on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September and says “see you in the first week of October.” This is a past holiday exception, not evidence of closure on 17 October or a guarantee of every later Friday/Saturday session. Check changes and weather for the visit date. Event enquiries: 042-251-4614.
