Narita N’EX vs Skyliner: return fares, destinations and ticket collection
Online Skyliner return tickets cost JPY 4,500; N’EX return tickets cost 5,200. Compare different arrival stations, onward travel costs and the foreign-passport or nationality rules before choosing.
Return and one-way fares
Adult train-only discount return tickets cost 4,500 for Skyliner and 5,200 for the N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket: a difference of JPY 700. These yen prices were checked on October 17, 2026. Additional city transport, exchange rates and payment fees are excluded.
Nippori → Keisei Ueno
Tokyo → Shinagawa → Shibuya → Shinjuku
JPY 700 fare difference · onward travel separate
A discounted Skyliner single costs 2,310. Buying two costs 4,620, or 120 more than the online return ticket. A regular paper single costs 2,580. With IC, the basic fare of 1,267 plus the liner charge of 1,300 totals 2,567. Paying only the basic fare does not cover Skyliner.
The JPY 5,200 N’EX ticket is a return ticket for arrival and departure through Narita within 14 days. For a one-way trip or departure through another airport, compare the conditions of a separate product.
Arrival stations for your hotel
Skyliner serves Nippori (日暮里) and Keisei Ueno (京成上野). Depending on the service, N’EX serves Tokyo (東京), Shinagawa (品川), Shibuya (渋谷), Shinjuku (新宿) and other destinations. Keisei Ueno and JR Ueno are different stations: identify your hotel’s actual station.
For a hotel near Ueno or Nippori, start with Skyliner; near Tokyo, Shibuya or Shinjuku, compare an N’EX service that goes directly there. This is editorial advice based on destinations. Add onward transport and transfers to the same hotel on both routes before relying on the 700 difference.
Skyliner’s advertised fastest 36 minutes is from Airport Terminal 2/3 to Nippori; N’EX’s fastest 53 minutes is Narita–Tokyo. Different endpoints prevent a hotel travel-time ranking. The connection diagram below is not a geographic map, distance scale, timetable or complete list of stops.
Tunnel work changes some N’EX services on November 6–8, 2026. On November 7, the Tokyo–Ofuna/Shinjuku sections are suspended and trains start or end at Tokyo. Some services on the evening of the 6th and morning of the 8th are affected too. Check the construction train list for a direct journey on those dates.

N’EX coverage and gates
The N’EX return ticket covers one airport→designated Tokyo-area JR journey and one return to the airport within 14 days. You cannot begin with a city→airport trip. Your outward destination and return departure station may differ within the covered area.
After N’EX, you can transfer to another JR train within the designated area before leaving the JR gates. On the return journey, you can also connect JR→N’EX inside the gates. Leaving the gates ends that direction’s use.
- Airport departure
- N’EX ordinary class
- JR transfer inside gates
- Destination in covered area
- Exit gates → that direction ends
One separate return within 14 days
A train-only Skyliner discount ticket excludes JR and subway travel after Nippori or Ueno. A package that includes Tokyo Subway Ticket is a separate product.
Collecting tickets at the airport
N’EX requires a passport issued outside Japan, checked at collection. The ordinary Skyliner e-ticket exchange method is for non-Japanese nationals. Facial-recognition products are outside this return-ticket comparison.
Collect N’EX at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station or Airport Terminal 2 Building Station and reserve an ordinary-class seat. Official JR travel-service-center hours are 08:30–19:00 at Terminal 1 and 08:30–20:00 at Terminal 2; passport-reader reserved-seat machines and the JR Ticket Office at both stations run 06:30–21:45. These are collection-facility hours, not last-train times.
For an online Skyliner return ticket, bring the exchange number or QR code and passport to a designated Narita Airport station counter. Initial exchange is unavailable at Nippori or Ueno. Keep the return exchange ticket supplied on arrival, then select the return train and seat before boarding.
Official fares and ticket exchange
Terminal 3 uses the Terminal 2/3 rail station. The airport estimates station→terminal walks of about five minutes for Terminals 1 and 2 and ten for Terminal 3; crowds, baggage and mobility can change the journey. Allow for immigration, baggage and collection before booking the actual train for your flight date.
