Cheonggyecheon after dinner: a short return walk and a rain plan
Walk from Cheonggye Plaza past Mojeongyo to Gwangtonggyo and return. The operator marks a ramp at Mojeongyo and stairs at Gwangtonggyo. With rain or access restrictions, stay above the stream and switch to Kyobo’s Gwanghwamun bookstore.
- 150 + 157 = 307m one way; 614m return. Access paths and actual walking lines are extra. This is a distance comparison, not a map or surveyed route.
- Closure or evacuation → leave for street level
A short return walk from the plaza
Cheonggyecheon runs between Jongno and Jung-gu in central Seoul. After dinner, the plaza-to-Gwangtonggyo section adds a manageable stretch of outdoor sightseeing without turning the evening into a long cross-city walk. Return along the same section towards Gwanghwamun; there is no need to continue all the way to Dongdaemun.
The operator gives drawing distances of 150m from the plaza to Mojeongyo and 157m from Mojeongyo to Gwangtonggyo. Together they make 307m one way, or 614m for the same-section return. These figures exclude access paths, the actual line you walk and photo stops. They are not a measured walking itinerary or a fixed walking time.
| Conditions | Stream return walk | Bookstore alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Dry; access open | Plaza ↔ Gwangtonggyo | Optional stop after walking |
| Rain, evacuation or closure | Do not descend into the channel | Go by street; arrive before 22:00 |
| Ramp needed | Enter and return at Mojeongyo | Check station/building access separately |
Choose the descent and the return together
Find the stream access before descending. The operator’s access diagram distinguishes the Mojeongyo ramp from stairs at Mojeongyo and Gwangtonggyo. Decide how to come back up while you are still at street level, rather than looking for a ramp after taking the stairs down.
With a stroller or wheelchair, use the marked Mojeongyo ramp as the starting and return point. Do not plan to leave by the Gwangtonggyo stairs. A ramp symbol does not establish continuous accessibility from a subway exit to the waterside. Open the operator’s Mojeongyo–Samilgyo mobility guide and check the marked access and any restrictions on site.

A bookstore instead of a rainy stream
The path normally opens around the clock, but rain can close it. Runoff from surrounding areas can enter through sluices and raise the water rapidly even when no rain is falling where you stand. An evacuation announcement means leave the channel immediately; do not wait to finish the walk or cross a closure barrier.
Kyobo Book Centre’s Gwanghwamun branch offers an indoor alternative. It occupies basement level 1 of the Kyobo building at 1 Jong-ro; its current store page lists 09:30–22:00 daily. Seoul’s tourism listing identifies Lunar New Year and Chuseok day as holidays, so check store notices for a holiday visit. Browsing books and stationery can replace waiting beside the water for rain to ease.
The journey from the stream to the bookstore includes outdoor streets. An indoor destination does not make this a covered route. If the channel is closed, use the streets above it; in severe weather, shorten both the walk and the bookstore plan and go home.

What to look for between the bridges
Look at the walkway below street level, the stones beside the water and the bridges joining the city above. The two photographs make the separation between traffic level and waterside walking level visible. A comparatively level path along the water does not remove the height change at its access points.
The restoration works ran from July 2003 to September 2005. Whole-stream length, restored length and total walkway length measure different things; none is the distance of this evening plan. The photographs show actual sunrise conditions in 2024 and an afternoon in 2023, rather than today’s lighting, event installations or crowds.

Arrival, dinner and the journey home
Cheonggye Plaza is at 1 Taepyeongno 1-ga, Jung-gu. The operator directs visitors from Line 5 Gwanghwamun Exit 5, about 60m away, or Lines 1/2 City Hall Exit 4, about 300m away. Those are plaza-access estimates, not a measured route added to the stream return distance. The plaza has no dedicated car park, making public transport the simpler arrival plan.
Eat in the Gwanghwamun or Mugyo-dong area before meeting at the plaza. For a named food option, Seoul’s tourism guide introduces Mijin as a buckwheat-noodle restaurant: the noodles are eaten with broth. This walking guide does not promise current prices or last-order times; arrange the meal separately. The tourism listing gives Mijin’s address as 19 Jong-ro.
Return from Gwangtonggyo to the plaza, then head for Gwanghwamun or City Hall station. A 24-hour path does not guarantee subway service or lighting everywhere. Korean map search names: 청계광장, 모전교, 광통교, 교보문고 광화문점.
