Gangneung without a car: station to Anmok Beach and back

Route 223-1 runs from Across from Gangneung Station to Anmok Coffee Street. Return from Anmok on route 300 toward Hyangho-ri and get off at Gangneung Station. An adult ordinary-bus ride costs ₩1,530 by transit card or ₩1,700 cash. The last Anmok-origin 300 leaves at 21:38 on weekdays and 21:28 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

  • Outbound: across the station → Anmok Coffee Street
  • Return: Anmok-origin 300 → Gangneung Station
  • Two paid adult rides by transit card: ₩3,060

Gangneung is on Korea’s east coast in Gangwon Province. Different bus numbers and stops serve the trip from the station to Anmok Beach and the return. Plan Anmok’s cafés and beach separately from downtown Jungang Market–Wolhwa Street, including the bus back.

For the outbound stop, search 강릉역건너편, “Across from Gangneung Station” (stop 4200293). It differs from 강릉역, “Gangneung Station” (4200721), where the return 300 stops. Use a marked crossing to reach the outbound side.

Route 223-1 ends at 안목커피거리, Anmok Coffee Street. Route 300 at the station heads toward Hyangho-ri, away from Anmok. Ordinary 300-1 runs from Gangneung Girls’ High School to Yongjigak without visiting the station-side stop; choose the separately listed 300-1(강릉역) if using that variant.

223-1 has 30 departures from its university terminus on weekdays and 29 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. This does not mean a bus arrives at the station every 30 minutes. The tourism board’s roughly 15-minute station–Anmok bus estimate is not a promise that includes waiting or traffic. Use the live Anmok-bound arrival display at your stop.

The three times for 300-1 via the station are departures from Hyangho-ri, not the railway station. That variant and 225-1 are absent from the official Saturday and Sunday/holiday tables; plan around 223-1 or 314-1 on those days. Look up trains for your date on KORAIL.

Transit-card fares and transfers

Ordinary-bus adult fares checked on 17 October 2026 are ₩1,530 by transit card and ₩1,700 cash. Two separately charged rides cost ₩3,060 or ₩3,400 per person. Train tickets, meals and café orders are extra.

Use a topped-up T-money, EZL or other accepted transit card and tap out when leaving. Up to two transfers to a different route number are free within one hour of alighting. The same route number, cash payment and insufficient balance do not qualify. A transfer to a seated bus can require a fare difference.

If several people pay with one card, only the highest-fare passenger receives the free transfer. Separate cards avoid that limitation. A return after a long beach visit should be budgeted as another paid ride rather than a one-hour transfer.

Board route 300 toward Hyangho-ri at 안목, Anmok (4201043), and alight at Gangneung Station. This departure stop differs from the Anmok Coffee Street terminus (4201044) of your outward journey. These are Anmok departure times, not station arrival times or guaranteed rail connections.

The weekend/holiday last bus leaves ten minutes earlier. The final three evening departures are 40 minutes apart in both day types. If you have a train to catch, choose an earlier bus and allow separately for reaching the stop, road delays and moving through the railway station.

17 October 2026 is a Saturday: the Saturday timetable lists the last route 300 departure from Anmok at 21:28. The Sunday 18 October table also ends at 21:28. These timetables took effect on 1 January 2025; an origin departure is not a live arrival or a guaranteed train connection. Bus enquiries: Donghae Sangsa 033-653-0320; Dongjin Bus 033-653-8011.

Where the station, market and beach sit

Jungang Market and Wolhwa Street are downtown, south of the railway station. Anmok is to the east on the coast. The map shows their separation; mapped roads are not automatically recommended walks or accessible routes.

You can eat and shop downtown before the beach, or visit the cafés first and return downtown. Wolhwa Street adjoins Jungang Market. This is an editorial combination of stops, not a measured itinerary or a transport guarantee.

Coffee, downtown food and beach conditions

Anmok Beach and Coffee Street are around 20-1 Changhae-ro 14beon-gil, Gangneung: 창해로14번길 20-1. Café hours and last orders vary by shop. Match your café stop to the return bus. The photograph below was taken at Anmok on 30 April 2022.

Jungang Market is at 21 Geumseong-ro: 금성로 21. Its tourism listing gives 08:30–21:00, with shop-level variation. Wolhwa Street occupies a former railway site downtown; its listed address is 2113 Gyeonggang-ro: 경강로 2113. Do not assume evening stalls operate without a dated night-market announcement.

Downtown food options include 장칼국수, jang-kalguksu, knife-cut noodles in a broth seasoned with chilli and soybean pastes, and 감자옹심이, gamja-ongsimi, small potato dumplings in soup. 초당순두부, Chodang sundubu, is a soft-tofu dish associated with Chodang Tofu Village; that village is a separate visit rather than a restaurant stop on this direct station–Anmok route. Menus and prices vary by shop.

Anmok’s 2026 swimming season ran from 10 July to 23 August. In October, plan for a beach walk and cafés. The tourism board prohibits swimming at night and outside the operating season.

Bus changes on 10 October 2026

The cancellations in the 10 October 2026 Gyeongpo Marathon notice, 07:30–11:00, were exceptions for that past event. They do not establish a recurring Saturday cancellation or a current suspension of routes 223-1 or 300. Use current route notices and live locations for the visit date.

Some trips on village routes 930, 931, 934, 930-1 and 931-1 are shortened. These are named services on that date, not a citywide bus shutdown or a weekly Saturday rule. Routes 223-1 and 300 are not listed as cancelled in this notice, but check live information for delays near traffic controls.
