Gyeongju After Dark: Cheomseongdae, Woljeonggyo and Wolji

Allow about 2½–3 hours from Cheomseongdae via Gyerim to Woljeonggyo and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. Dinner and the journey home are extra. The bridge is free; the pond precinct is ticketed, with entry closing at 21:30. Start with Wolji if you arrive late.

  • Wolji individual admission: KRW 3,000 for ages 19–64
  • Entry closes at 21:30; arrive with a generous margin
  • Ordinary bridge hours 09:00–22:00; tower exhibition 10:00–22:00

A free bridge and a paid pond

Gyeongju, the former Silla capital in southeastern Korea, has these evening sights in its old town. Bomun and Bulguksa need separate travel. Woljeonggyo is the restored bridge at Gyo-dong 274. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is the palace and pond site at 102 Wonhwa-ro; Donggungwon near Bomun is a separate botanical attraction.

Palace and pond precinct; checked 10 October 2026

The city information checked on 10 October 2026 lists ordinary bridge admission as free. Individual Wolji tickets are KRW 3,000 for ages 19–64, KRW 2,000 for ages 13–18 and eligible military visitors, and KRW 1,000 for ages 7–12. Check proof and eligibility for exemptions. The free outer lotus gardens are separate from the paid interior; do not expect lotus bloom in October.

From Cheomseongdae to Woljeonggyo

Begin with outdoor views of Cheomseongdae, the stone observatory at Inwang-dong 839-1. City hours are 09:00–22:00, shortened to 21:00 in November–February. Admission is free; this is not a plan to enter the tower. Choose your start around the season’s dusk and actual access rather than depending on an exact light-switching time.

Continue south through Gyerim towards the bridge. The city walking guide, updated in December 2023, gives about 200 m and three minutes to Gyerim, then 350 m and five minutes to Woljeonggyo. Allow 15–20 minutes for the connection, adding crossings and pauses. Use marked visitor paths, avoiding excavation areas and unmarked dark shortcuts.

Normal published bridge hours are 09:00–22:00, with the gate-tower exhibition 10:00–22:00. View the river reflections from permitted riverside paths. The stepping stones are not a required crossing, particularly in darkness, rain or high water. The historical photograph does not promise the same lighting or river conditions on your visit.

Reach Wolji before the entry cutoff

The city describes the bridge-to-Wolji link as about 1 km and 15 minutes; budget 20–30 minutes in a real itinerary. The paid site opens 09:00–22:00 and entry closes 21:30. Aiming for roughly 20:30 gives margin, not guaranteed admission. Arrive earlier when busy. If starting late, prioritize Wolji before the other stops. The site contact is +82-54-750-8655.

Dinner, a snack and the journey back

Eat in the Hwangnidan-gil or old-town area before the walk. For an optional snack, Hwangnam Bread’s main shop is at 783 Taejong-ro. These small baked pastries contain sweet red-bean filling; they need not replace dinner. Its official shop listing gives 08:00–22:00 and +82-54-749-7000. Recheck holiday changes and that day’s stock; delivery-box prices are not a verified walk-in snack budget.

KTX Gyeongju Station is outside the old-town rail-station location. National Gyeongju Museum directions list buses 700 and 710 from the KTX station to Donggung and Wolji, but daytime directions do not establish a late return service. Check your return bus, train or taxi plan before sightseeing and leave boarding time. The grove, river paths and heritage precinct are not a verified fully step-free route; a shorter Wolji-plus-one-stop evening is sensible when walking is difficult.
