Abu Oreum in Jeju: can you stop at the first crater view?
At Abu Oreum in inland Songdang-ri, eastern Jeju, a short uphill walk to the first crater view can be enough. Expect grass, dirt and wind. Confirm bus routes and timetables for your travel date in the official journey planner.
- Turn back at the first view, or add the rim circuit
- The guide’s 30 minutes is an estimate, not a measured total route
- Confirm access and arrange the return journey first
How far to walk
Abu Oreum is inland in Songdang-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, rather than on Jeju’s eastern coast. An oreum is one of the island’s small volcanic cones.
VisitJeju describes gently sloping flanks and a circular crater. A low-looking hill does not establish a flat or continuously step-free route.
A shorter crater visit
A shorter crater visit
- Extent
- Follow signs uphill; turn back at the first view
- Underfoot
- For walkers comfortable with uphill dirt paths
- Return
- Return on the signed approach
A rim walk
A rim walk
- Extent
- Add only the signed rim sections open on site
- Underfoot
- Allow for grass, dirt and exposed wind
- Return
- Shorten the walk if weather or fatigue worsens
For a shorter outing, follow the signs uphill and turn back at the first crater viewing point. Add the rim only if your energy and on-site access conditions permit it. Stay on designated trails; do not descend the crater slope to get closer to the circular cedar grove.
The education authority’s marine training centre guide gives 30 minutes without clearly defining the route. Setting aside roughly an hour for pauses and on-site decisions is Pick’s planning suggestion. VisitJeju’s outer circumference of about 1,400 m is geographic information, not the total distance from and back to parking.

Admission and access
The education authority’s guide lists admission as free. That does not establish free parking. VisitJeju warns that access restrictions can apply: confirm access for your date with Jeju Tourist Information Center at +82-64-740-6000. A missing booking procedure on these pages does not mean entry is always unrestricted or never requires arrangements.
The education guide confirms a parking area and says it is tight for large buses. Search for Abu Oreum Parking by its Korean name and follow local entrance signs. Do not use a mountain parcel address or the attraction reference coordinate as a vehicle entrance. The guide does not guarantee capacity, vehicle limits, toilets, drinking water or continuous paving.

Transport and preparation
Jeju’s official bus notices record a suspension of routes 810-1, 810-2, 820-1 and 820-2 from 20 May 2024 and their resumption from 24 May 2024. Both pages display a registration date of 27 July 2026, but the service-change dates in the notices are in 2024. These notices alone do not establish current service or frequency. Check routes and timetables in the official journey planner for your travel date. If using a car or taxi, arrange the return too; a stop name guarantees neither service nor waiting taxis.
Wear trainers or walking shoes for grass and dirt, bring water and a windproof layer, and visit in daylight. Provincial guidance advises avoiding oreum during severe rain, typhoon or heavy-snow alerts. Shorten the exposed-rim plan in strong wind or slippery conditions. If a continuous step-free or wheelchair-usable route is essential, choose a destination with separately confirmed access.
Trees may hide the circular cedar grove from ground level. Do not expect the aerial donut shape to be fully visible from the trail. The photograph shows a ground-level scene from 2018. Combining the walk with meals or accommodation on the eastern coast involves a separate drive; it is not a continuous walking itinerary from the oreum to the coast.
