Windows 11 clipboard: why pinned items survive clearing

Clearing the clipboard and restarting the PC leave pinned items in place. Delete an unwanted entry through Windows+V, and check cross-device syncing separately.

  • Settings → System → Clipboard lets you clear device and cloud history, with pinned items excluded. Restarting the PC also preserves pinned entries.
  • Syncing requires the same Microsoft or work account. You can sync copied text automatically, or select an entry's sync button in manual mode. Manual selection better fits a need to send only selected text to another device.

What clearing and restarting leave behind

Settings → System → Clipboard lets you clear device and cloud history, with pinned items excluded. Restarting the PC also preserves pinned entries.

To remove a particular entry, press Windows+V and choose its See more (…) → Delete option. Keeping a frequently used address and removing a one-time message are different tasks.

History and syncing are separate choices

For repeated pasting on this PC, press Windows+V and turn history on. Enable clipboard history across devices separately when you want to use copied text on another PC.

Syncing requires the same Microsoft or work account. You can sync copied text automatically, or select an entry's sync button in manual mode. Manual selection better fits a need to send only selected text to another device.

When an item is missing

History holds up to 25 entries. Older unpinned entries are removed to make room; pinned entries are excluded. The limit is 4MB per item, supporting text, HTML and bitmap formats.

If a large file is absent, clearing history will not address its size or format. Check those limits first; delete a remaining pinned phrase individually. This guide concerns Windows 11 clipboard history.
